MINTEQA2 for Windows

A Versatile Model for Aqueous Geochemistry

Next training opportunity:  August 6-7, 2008

Designed for Win95/98/2000/XP systems, MINTEQA2 for Windows can do all of the calculations that the official U.S.EPA DOS version can do and it uses the same thermodynamic database.  It provides an intuitive graphical user interface using the familiar Windows conventions.  MINTEQA2 for Windows computes the equilibrium composition of a multi-component aqueous system including the mass of each component in solution, sorbed, or precipitated.  Plus, it now ships with a new Database Editor that takes the pain out of adding new components and associated reactions to the thermodynamic database.  This Microsoft Excel application allows you to scroll or search the database, make changes in any species parameter, and add or delete components and species.

  • Computes equilibrium composition of aqueous systems
  • Uses the U.S. EPA MINTEQA2 computational engine and database
  • Allows user-specified equilibrium constraints including pH, pe, and multiple gas and solid phases
  • Includes empirical and surface complexation (constant capacitance, MIT Two-Layer (diffuse-layer) and triple-layer) sorption models with screens and menus that make specifying treatment of electrostatic terms easier
  •

  • Automates sensitivity analyses over pH, pE, the concentration of any species, the log K of any species, the partial pressure of a gas, ionic strength, or temperature
  • Presents results graphically; can plot the concentration of any species versus the sensitivity parameter
  • Easy management of thermodynamic database

MINTEQA2 for Windows comes with sorption databases prepared for hydrous ferric oxide and goethite surfaces for use with the MIT Two-Layer (diffuse-layer) sorption model as described by David Dzombak and Samir Mathur.  The model is provided with an extensive HTML help system and a comprehensive user guide especially useful for the sorption models.

MINTEQA2 for Windows is a joint effort by Allison Geoscience Consultants, Inc. and HydroGeoLogic, Inc.  Allison Geoscience has worked on the development and programming of the U.S. EPA (DOS version) of MINTEQA2 since 1987.  We are enthused about the ease of use and power of MINTEQA2 for Windows.  The ability to specify a variety of sensitivity analyses and to immediately see the impact on the equilibrium due to changing a thermodynamic constant or other system parameter gives the user much greater insight into the chemistry than is available using the DOS version.

Ordering Information

MINTEQA2 for Windows is available in Standard, Academic, and Student versions.  Full technical support and a printed user manual is included with each copy of the Standard and Academic versions.  The Standard, Academic, and Student versions are identical in capabilities and content.  All include the full thermodynamic database.  The Academic version is labeled Academic Use Only, as is its output files.  The Student version is similarly labeled "for Student Use Only".  (The Student version also includes only limited technical support and does not include a printed user manual, but note that the manual may be freely downloaded from this web site.)  The Academic version is available only to academic institutions.  Individual copies of the Student version may be purchased only by students (proof of student registration required).  The student version may also be purchased by academic institutions as part of an Instructional Bundle that includes one Academic version and a multi-user license for five Student versions.  The Instructional Bundle is ideal for schools that wish to install the model on department workstations.

FREE Trial Version

The link below provides access to a FREE trial version of MINTEQA2 for Windows.  The trial version is intended solely for you to evaluate the functionality of MINTEQA2 for Windows.  It has no printing capabilities, it does not provide for saving graphs, and it has a limited database.  It will function for five days after its first use.  The trial version download is a zipped EXE file (MINTEQA2 for Windows Trial.EXE) that can be saved in the directory you designate.  Once it is saved, go to the directory where you saved it and double-click the filename.  It will suggest a directory in which to place the installation files (C:\MINTEQA2_temp) which you may change if desired.  It can also run the SETUP.EXE file automatically when it extracts to this directory.  Answer all questions in the setup to complete installation of the trial version.

There is also a download link for a PDF file that describes the limitations of the free trial version and the thermodynamic database of the full version.  Another download link provides the documentation (user manual) for the full version in PDF format.  Note that the user manual was written specifically for MINTEQA2 for Windows by Dr. Jerry Allison.  It is not simply a rehash of the DOS version user manual.  Ready to order?  View our printable order form (print it, complete it, fax or mail it).
